India and Egypt are celebrating in 2022, the 75th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday greeted his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry, the Egyptian government and people on their National Day and expressed confidence in the two countries’ “long-standing partnership.”

Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “Greetings and best wishes to Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and the Government and people of Egypt on their National Day. Our long-standing partnership continues to grow.”

As two of the world's earliest civilizations, India and Egypt have a long history of close engagement based on years of communication and collaboration on bilateral, regional, political, and international issues.

On August 18, 1947, the two countries jointly announced the start of diplomatic ties at the ambassadorial level. Both nations were founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement and have worked closely together in international forums.

Egypt has been historically one of India's most significant commercial partners on the continent of Africa. Mineral oil, petroleum, fertilizers, inorganic chemicals, and cotton were the top Egyptian imports into India during the years 2021–2022, while buffalo meat, iron and steel, light vehicles, and cotton yarn were the top exports from India to Egypt.

India and Egypt also have strong defence ties with each other. Since 2015, there have been a number of high-level visits and interactions between defence delegations from both countries, and defence forces from both countries have also engaged with each other from time to time.
