India's bilateral relations with Botswana have been close and friendly
The 4th India-Botswana Foreign Office Consultations (FOC), held in Gaborone on Thursday (December 14, 2023), have marked an important benchmark in the evolving relationship between the two nations, opening new avenues for cooperation and mutual development.

During the neeting, both sides discussed the potential for cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, defence, health, arts and culture, and energy, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

They also took stock of the entire sweep of bilateral relations between India and Botswana, encompassing political exchanges, development partnership, trade and investments, and consular issues, the MEA added.

India and Botswana agreed to continue high-level engagements at official and political levels, including meetings of joint institutional mechanisms to keep the bilateral partnership robust, the MEA said. The Indian side also reiterated invitation to Botswana to join the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI).

It was agreed to hold the next round of Consultations at mutually convenient dates in New Delhi.

India established diplomatic relations with Botswana immediately after
its independence in 1966 and opened a resident diplomatic mission in
Gaborone in 1987. Botswana established its mission in New Delhi in 2006.

Bilateral relations with Botswana have been close and friendly, with a new
thrust in mutual trust over the last few years through high levels visits to each
other’s countries.

The deepening India-Botswana relationship is poised to open new doors for economic development, technological innovation, and cultural exchange. For India, this partnership is an opportunity to solidify its role as a key player in African affairs and to further its global diplomatic and economic objectives.

For Botswana, the strengthened ties with a global power like India signify an avenue for accelerated development and diversification of its economy.
