A notable diplomatic milestone was marked by the recent visit of Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Vincent Biruta to India. 

The visit on December 7-8, 2023, served as an opportunity to explore new avenues of cooperation and to reinforce the existing partnership across various domains, including economic and development cooperation. 

During this visit, in-depth delegation talks were held between the visiting Rwandan Foreign Minister and India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on December 7, 2023.

"Glad to welcome FM @Vbiruta of Rwanda in New Delhi this evening. Discussed our steadily increasing engagement in economic, development cooperation, defence and cultural domains.Exchanged perspectives on regional and global developments of mutual interest and our collaboration in the Commonwealth, AU and the UN," EAM Jaishankar posted on social media platform X. 

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two leaders reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations. They also exchanged views on regional and international issues as well as co-operation in multilateral fora. The Rwandan side specifically appreciated the inclusion of African Union in G 20, the MEA said.

"India and Rwanda enjoy friendly and cordial relations. The visit by Foreign Minister of Rwanda will provide a further impetus to the existing bilateral relations," the MEA noted. 

CURRENT INDIA-RWANDA RELATIONSHIP 

The relationship between India and Rwanda has been characterized by mutual respect and shared initiatives for development. Key bilateral developments in recent years include India's investment in Rwandan infrastructure and support in education and healthcare sectors. This recent dialogue is set to deepen these ties and open up new avenues for cooperation, such as digital technology and sustainable development.

The India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS-1), platform which has been instrumental in shaping India's foreign policy towards Africa, focuses on a partnership model. The discussions during this visit align with the Summit's objectives of enhancing economic ties, promoting sustainable development, and fostering mutual understanding between India and African nations.

Ultimately, the visit of Rwanda's Minister of Foreign Affairs to India signifies a forward momentum in the bilateral relationship, opening new chapters of cooperation and mutual growth. It reinforces India's commitment to strengthening its ties with Africa and underscores the importance of Rwanda as a key partner in this endeavor.
