BILATERAL DEFENCE COOPERATION

India and Mozambique have regularly conducted high-level exchanges and interactions across numerous fields, with defense cooperation being a key area of focus. Progress in this domain is facilitated through regular Joint Defence Working Group (JDWG) meetings, which serve as platforms for discussing and advancing mutual defense interests.

INS Sumedha, a vital asset of the Indian Navy's Eastern Fleet based in Visakhapatnam, operates under the operational command of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command. The ship is equipped with advanced weapon systems, sensors, and state-of-the-art navigation and communication systems, including Electronic Warfare suits.

It has previously been engaged in various operations including fleet support, coastal and offshore patrolling, ocean surveillance, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions. Through joint surveillance and maritime operations, the Indian Navy not only demonstrates its operational skills but considerably contributes to the stability and security of the region.. This deployment further enhances India's strategic footprint in the African region, promoting peace, security, and cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.

The port call of INS Sumedha in Maputo is a reinforcement of India's strategic outreach and commitment to maritime security cooperation. As India continues to extend its naval diplomacy, such missions play a crucial role in cementing its position as a responsible and reliable maritime power in the global arena.
