Indian Railways and USAID will collaborate on renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives
In a major step towards reducing its carbon footprint, Indian Railways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States Agency for International Development/India (USAID/India) to collaborate on renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives.

The MoU, signed on June 14, 2023, aims to support Indian Railways' commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman and CEO, Railway Board, and witnessed the participation of Naveen Gulati, Member (Traction and Rolling Stock), Railway Board, Indian Railways, and Isabel Coleman, Deputy Administrator, USAID.

The partnership between Indian Railways and USAID is expected to offer technical support and assistance in a number of areas linked to energy efficiency and renewable energy. One of the main goals of the cooperation is to make long-term energy planning easier, including the incorporation of renewable energy technologies into the infrastructure of the Indian Railways.

As stated in the Memorandum of Understanding, both parties would collaborate to create an Energy Efficiency Policy and Action Plan for Indian Railways facilities, supporting energy-efficient procedures and innovations.

In addition, they would concentrate on methods for acquiring renewable energy to aid Indian Railways in realizing its aspirational net-zero goal. USAID will offer technical assistance to overcome any legal or implementation challenges that arise along the way.

To facilitate large-scale renewable energy procurement, the collaboration will involve bid design and bid management support for system-friendly projects. The agreement highlights support for Indian Railways in advancing electric mobility solutions in recognition of the significance of e-mobility in the transportation industry.

Lastly, through programs, conferences, and events in the targeted areas, the collaboration will also promote capacity-building and information exchange.
