MoS Meenakshi Lekhi visited Georgia to commemorate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties

Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi met Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili earlier this week and discussed matters of mutual concern in addition to examining the development of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Taking to Twitter, she wrote, "Pleasure to meet Georgian Foreign Minister Mr. Ilia Darchiashvili @iliadarch today. Conveyed warm wishes on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations."

"We reviewed the progress in our bilateral relations. Both sides expressed their commitment to further strengthen ties, especially in the field of culture, education, trade & tourism. We also discussed issues concerning Indian students & farmers," she added.

MoS Lekhi was on an official visit to Georgia on October 10-11 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of India-Georgia diplomatic ties.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), MoS Meenakshi Lekhi also met First Deputy Chairman of Parliament George Volski, Chairman of the India-Georgia Friendship Group Giorgi Amilakhvari and Deputy Minister of Culture Mr. Irakli Giviashvili.

During these talks, both sides agreed to enhance bilateral relations in political, cultural, educational and trade and economic spheres, the MEA said. The Georgian side assured to resolve the issue of long term visa for Indian nationals working in their agricultural sector.

MoS Lekhi later visited the Tbilisi State Medical University and interacted with Indian medical students there. While there, she also met the university’s Chancellor and acting Rector Professor Zurab Orjonikidze.

During her stay in Tbilisi, she also paid floral tribute at the Mahatma Gandhi Statue which was unveiled by India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in July 2021.
