UNGA President Abdulla Shahid is on a two-day (August 28-29) visit to India

President of the UN General Assembly and Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid arrived in India on Sunday and met newly elected Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar in New Delhi.

Sharing this piece of information, the Vice President's office tweeted: “Happy to welcome President of the UN General Assembly and Foreign Minister of Maldives Abdulla Shahid to India. His dynamic leadership of the 76th UNGA and his Presidency priorities, in particular on revitalizing the UN, has universal appeal.”

Earlier Foreign Secretary, Vinay Mohan Kwatra called on the President of the UN General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, and talked about further strengthening ties between India and the Maldives.

The official spokesperson for India's Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi, tweeted images from his meeting along with the caption,

"Foreign Secretary called on @UN_PGA and Maldives FM @Abdulla_Shahid today. FS congratulated him on his ‘Presidency of Hope’ and for his visionary leadership in the 76th session of the UNGA. Also discussed further deepening of India's strong bilateral relations with Maldives."

The visit of Abdulla Shahid has taken place almost three weeks after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's trip to India during which six agreements were signed between the two countries. These agreements included cyber security, capacity building, housing, disaster management and infrastructure development.

India had also announced a Line of Credit of US$100 million to Maldives for the completion of development projects in a time-bound manner.

Maldives is one of India's main maritime neighbours in the Indian Ocean, and bilateral ties between the two nations have greatly strengthened recently, especially in the areas of security and defence.
