ZNPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, is currently under the occupation of Russian forces

India has expressed concern over the situation at Ukraine's Zaporizhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and said it supports steps to ensure safety and security at the facility.

"India remains concerned over the situation at the Zaporizhya Nuclear Power Plant," India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ruchira Kamboj said at a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing. She added that India supports the ongoing efforts including that of the IAEA to reduce tensions and steps to ensure nuclear safety and security at the facility.

ZNPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, is currently under the occupation of Russian forces with Ukraine keen to regain control. International media reports have quoted experts as warning that an explosion around the plant could leak radiation across Europe.

Kamboj pointed out that India continued to carefully follow developments regarding the safety and security of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities. "India attaches high importance to ensuring the safety and security of these facilities, as any accident involving nuclear facilities could potentially have disastrous consequences for public health and the environment," she said.

She added that India had taken note of the most recent information concerning the nuclear power plants and facilities in Ukraine, including the updates released on August 19 by the IAEA, and hoped that the two sides would agree to the proposed visit by a team from the IAEA to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and its surrounding areas, as indicated in their most recent statements.

She concluded by reiterating India's position that the global order is anchored on international law, the UN Charter and respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states.
