Calling for a peaceful resolution of the situation in Ukraine, India has said that it is closely following the developments including ongoing high-level discussions between Russia and the US.

Responding to a query during the weekly media briefing on Friday, Ministry of External Affairs Official Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the Indian Embassy in Kyiv was also monitoring local developments.

"We call for a peaceful resolution of the situation through sustained diplomatic efforts for long-term peace and stability in the region and beyond," Bagchi said.

The past few weeks have seen thousands of Russian troops massed near Ukraine's border, prompting NATO forces to go on standby in case Russia attacks its neighbour.

While Russia has denied that it has any plans to attack Ukraine, this has turned into the latest flashpoint in Moscow’s relations with the West.
