A Bangladesh ferry carrying around 150 passengers collided with a cargo vessel and sank in the Shitalakkhya River, lying south of Capital Dhaka on Sunday

Saddened by the tragic loss of lives in a ferry accident in Narayanganj district of Bangladesh, India has offered its deepest condolences to bereaved families and the government.

Official Spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi on Monday expressed shock over the incident, saying, “In this moment of grief, our thoughts and prayers remain with the brotherly people of Bangladesh.”

“We are saddened by the tragic loss of lives in a ferry incident in Narayanganj district in Bangladesh. Our deepest condolences to bereaved families and the government of Bangladesh,” Bagchi said in his tweet.


On Sunday, a Bangladeshi passenger vessel ML Sabit Al Hasan, sank after colliding with the cargo ship, SKL-3, in the Shitalakkhya River in Munshiganj about 16 km south of Dhaka, according to a report. Police and onlookers said the cargo vessel fled the scene after the collision, it said.

The death toll from the capsized boat in the Shitalakkhya River on Sunday has climbed to 36. The launch had an estimated 150 passengers, the report said.
