US Congressman Andy Levin, addressing the US House of Representatives on Tuesday, hailed the Indian Government’s efforts to engage with the protesting farmers across the nation. According to a report in Deccan Herald, he found it heartening to watch democracy in action in India.

Levin, while addressing the US House of Representatives, hailed the Indian government for its efforts to engage with the protesting farmers.

The government has held six rounds of talks with the farmers' union leaders so far.

The Indian farmers have been protesting since November 26, seeking the repeal of the three Farm Laws and dubbing these laws as anti-farmers and a threat to the MSP (Minimum Support Price) system which would further leave them at the mercy of big private entities.

The report quoted Levin saying that while the Indian Government should have consulted the farmers before passing these three laws, he welcomed the efforts of the government in engaging with the farmers and their unions.

Levin, who serves as the US Representative for Michigan's 9th congressional district, also expressed concerns over reports of violence against peaceful protesters and said, "On behalf of my constituents who represent the vibrant Indian diaspora community and have rallied in support of these farmers, I call on the Indian government to respect the vital right to peaceful protest and to engage in good-faith talks to ensure farmers’ livelihoods are preserved".
