India has secured its position by contesting against nations like China and Afghanistan

India has become a member of the United Nations’ Commission on Status of Women (UNCSW), a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) by winning an election against nations like China and Afghanistan. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, TS Tirumurti informed this in a tweet.

“India wins seat in prestigious #ECOSOC body! India elected Member of Commission on Status of Women #CSW. It’s a ringing endorsement of our commitment to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in all our endeavours. We thank member states for their support,” Trimurti said.

According to a report published in India Today, India has secured its position by contesting against nations like China and Afghanistan.

Interestingly, while India and Afghanistan won the ballot among 54 members, China could not cross the half-way mark, the report said. This is despite the fact that China is celebrating its 25 years of Beijing World Conference on Women (1995).

The UNCSW is a part of UN’s ECOSOC and an international women’s body that promotes gender equality and empowerment of women and India will be a member of the UNCSW for four years from 2021 to 2025.

India has been carving its way into the most prestigious UN agencies and the UNCSW membership is an example of that. In fact, earlier this year, India was elected to the most powerful UN body, United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on June 18, 2020 with a whopping 184 votes out of 192.

It was the eighth time that India was elected to the UNSC after serving in 1950 to 1951, 1967 to 1968, 1972 to 1973, 1977 to 1978, 1984 to 1985, 1991 to 1992 and 2011 to 2012.

By securing the temporary seat in UNSC, India became the only candidate in the Asia-Pacific Group (APG).
