Chabahar Port is the only Iranian port located on the shores of the Makran Sea and the Indian Ocean

A ship carrying containers with 8,097 tons of wheat provided by India to Afghanistan arrived in Iran’s Chabahar Port on Saturday. This was the eighth ship from India to Chabahar Port in the recent past, Iran’s Mehr News Agency reports

The Director-General of Ports and Maritime Department of Sistan-Baluchestan province, Behrouz Aqaei was quoted by the Iranian news agency as saying that containers are to transit to different provinces in Afghanistan via a corridor leading to Milak border.

He pointed out that the Iranian port has handled over 53,000 tons of India’s wheat for Afghanistan since the beginning of the current fiscal, that is March 20. India sent its first consignment to Afghanistan through the same port in 2017.

The Chabahar Port in Sistan and Baluchestan province is the only Iranian port located on the shores of the Makran Sea and the Indian Ocean. In 2016, the three countries - Iran, India and Afghanistan jointly established a trade route for land-locked Central Asian countries. This corridor was officially inaugurated in February 2019.

The port is also of significance due to its strategic location to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
