The India-Russia bilateral summit due to be held in October this year may open doors to new defence collaborations. India expects major announcements including the Russian investment in the ‘Make in India’ programme during the summit, the Indian Envoy to Russia has said.

An ANI report published by BusinessWorld suggested that the bilateral summit is likely to become a discussion ground for the countries to discuss issues ranging from politics to trade to diplomatic ties.

The report says that the defence industry cooperation is going to be one of the key areas of collaboration between the two countries and will be discussed during the upcoming summit.

Indian Envoy to Russia Venkatesh Varma said, “The Indian-Russian bilateral summit will discuss all issues – political, economic, trade, energy. And of course, defence cooperation will be one of the main pillars of cooperation.”

He said that India expects major announcements during the summit. He said, “We expect some major announcements, including Russian support for the Make in India programme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Russia has extended very positive support, we are very grateful for that.”

India and Russia are looking forward to this bilateral summit. Recently, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla spoke to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov. They discussed all the upcoming exchanges and ways to keep them going.

The report said that the PM Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar are expected to attend the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meet.
