The incumbent SLPP party managed to win 145 out of 225 seats in the elections

India on Sunday congratulated Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on the landmark victory of his party, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), in the general elections held recently, The Daily FT reported. The Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay called the Sri Lankan PM in the afternoon to give best wishes to him and his party.

He said that India has a strong desire to work closely with Sri Lanka for strengthening further the cooperation between the two nations, the report said. Baglay recalled and mentioned PM Modi’s comments on the same, The Daily FT reported.

PM Modi had praised Sri Lanka for a successful polling session amid the on-going COVID-19 crisis. The report said that PM Modi has acknowledged the remarkable performance of the party in the elections.

According to the report, the huge mandate received by SLPP can be a milestone in India-Sri Lanka relationship. Both nations can see it as a fresh opportunity to improve and strengthen the bilateral relations and can support each other in many ways including alleviating the economic impact of Coronavirus pandemic.

The General Elections in Sri Lanka were held on August 5 to elect 225 members of Parliament. The incumbent SLPP party registered a massive win in the elections. PM Rajapaksa’s party managed to win 145 out of 225 seats.
