Belgium was among the first European countries to establish relations with India in September 1947
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo on Tuesday (March 26, 2024) and discussed steps to strengthen the bilateral partnership in diverse sectors in addition to cooperation on regional as well global issues.

Prime Minister Modi also congratulated Prime Minister De Croo on the recent successful hosting of the First Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels.

"Spoke to Belgium PM @alexanderdecroo. Congratulated him on the success of the First Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels. Exchanged views on strengthening bilateral ties; advancing India-EU Partnership under Belgian Presidency; and cooperation on regional and global issues," Prime Minister Modi wrote on social media platform X. 

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders reviewed the excellent relations between India and Belgium. "They discussed ways to further strengthen the bilateral partnership in diverse sectors including trade, investment, clean technologies, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, green hydrogen, IT, defence, ports, among other others," the MEA said.

During their conversation, the two leaders affirmed their commitment to further bolster the India–EU Strategic Partnership under the ongoing Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

"They exchanged views on regional and global developments. They agreed upon the need to enhance cooperation and support for early restoration of peace and security in the West Asia region and Russia- Ukraine conflict," the MEA said.

It may be recalled that Prime Minister Modi visited Belgium in March 2016 and held extensive bilateral talks. This was followed by a state visit to India by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium came in November 2017.

India and Belgium enjoy warm and friendly bilateral relations. Belgium was among the first European countries to establish relations with India in September 1947.
