The all-women platoon’s ability to connect with local women and children has garnered widespread recognition
Earlier this week, India achieved an important milestone in international peacekeeping - January 8, 2024 was the first anniversary of India's all-woman platoon's deployment in Abyei, a region straddling Sudan and South Sudan. This deployment was executed under the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).

In early 2023, India dispatched its largest single unit of women peacekeepers to a UN Mission since it deployed its first all-women contingent in Liberia in 2007. Comprising two officers and 25 other ranks, the contingent specializes in community outreach and security, addressing the humanitarian needs of women and children in conflict zones. This aligns with India's objective to increase female representation in peacekeeping forces.

The all-women platoon has been impactful in Abyei, addressing challenges heightened by recent violence. Their unique ability to connect with local women and children, especially victims of sexual violence, has garnered widespread recognition.

The UN mission had warmly welcomed the platoon, deployed in key areas such as Rumajak and Dokura.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, praised the deployment, noting the enhanced efficiency and empathy of women peacekeepers. The UNISFA's mandate, according to the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1990, includes strengthening the Abyei Police Service and monitoring armed forces' redeployment in the area.

This deployment enriches India's peacekeeping legacy, with Indian women previously acknowledged for their contributions to UN missions. Indian teams in Congo and South Sudan have been instrumental in integrating women and children into community development projects.

On the anniversary, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York Ruchira Kamboj tweeted, "Marking 1 year since #India's all-#women platoon arrived in #Abyei. Their contributions are remarkable- from reaching remote communities to empowering violence victims, they're key players in nation-building." With this deployment, there has been a sharp increase in the role women play in peacekeeping and nation-building.

The first anniversary of India's all-woman platoon in Abyei celebrates their achievements and reaffirms India’s commitment to peace, equality, and empowerment globally.
