Fiji has been hit hard by cyclone Yasa, causing extensive damage and destruction of critical infrastructure

The Indian High Commission in Fiji handed over the disaster relief supplies to the Fiji government for supporting its recovery efforts after the country was hit by tropical Cyclone Yasa.

The supplies were handed over by the Indian High Commission to Fiji’s Minister of Rural and Maritime Development Inia Seruiratu on Sunday.

“Relief supplies from India were handed over by the AHC Suva to Minister for Defence & Disaster Management, Hon. @ISeruiratu for supporting the @FijianGovt’s recovery efforts after #TCYasa. India providing humanitarian assistance & disaster relief in Indo-Pacific #IPOI,” the Indian embassy said in a tweet.

Fiji was hit by cyclone Yasa on December 17 and 18 that caused extensive damage and destruction of critical infrastructure.

Reflecting its close ties with the island nation, India has sent two consignments of disaster relief supplies recently. The first consignment of supplies reached Fiji on January 2 while the second consignment reached on January 6.

The relief material sent in the wake of tropical cyclone Yasa highlighted India's commitment to providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief support to friendly foreign countries as a first responder, the Ministry of External Affairs had said in a statement.

"This was possible thanks to the effective cooperation among multiple agencies in three countries to deliver the relief material to Fiji in record time," it said.

The MEA said India remains committed to extend full support to Fiji's efforts to restore the livelihoods of the affected communities and to build resilient infrastructure.

India has time and again reiterated its commitment to support the Indo-Pacific region and disaster risk reduction is a key pillar of the country’s commitment.

"Disaster risk reduction and management is an important pillar of India's Indo-Pacific Oceans' Initiative (IPOI) announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2019," the MEA said.

After receiving the supplies, Fiji’s Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development thanked India for its humanitarian assistance.

“Dhanyavaad to the people of India! Today, @MRMDFiji Minister Hon.@ISeruiratu received a donation of humanitarian supplies from the @HCI_Suva. The supplies included #DignityKits for both men & women & sleeping mats to be distributed to affected communities in V/Levu.Flag of IndiaFlag of Fiji,” it said.
