PM Modi expressed his appreciation for WHO's important role in facilitating a coordinated global response to COVID-19

Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured India’s support to World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in their fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

The two discussed the vast potential of traditional medicine for promoting health and wellness in the world during a telephonic conversation on Wednesday.

“Had an excellent conversation with the DG of @WHO @DrTedros. We discussed the vast potential of traditional medicine for promoting health and wellness in the world. I also assured India’s support to WHO and the world community in the fight against COVID-19," PM Modi said on Twitter.

The WHO DG welcomed India’s leadership in health globally and in universal health coverage. Taking to Twitter to thank PM Modi, he wrote, “Discussed to strengthen and collaborate for knowledge, research and training in context of traditional medicine with @narendramodi.”

He also thanked PM Modi for his support on making a COVID-19 vaccine available to the world. He wrote, “Thanks Prime Minister @narendramodi for your strong commitment to COVAX and emphasis on making the COVID-19 vaccine available globally. Pandemic is a huge challenge for the world, and we will work shoulder to shoulder to end it.”

PM Modi on the other hand expressed his appreciation for WHO's important role in facilitating a coordinated global response to the COVID-19 pandemic. They discussed the benefits of a Traditional Medicine System especially for enhancing wellness and immunity of the global population.

They agreed on the need for integrating traditional medicine solutions into modern medical practice through holistic protocols, and for careful scientific validation of time-tested traditional medicine products and practices.

PM Modi also noted the need to not lose sight of the battle against other diseases, and appreciated the importance of WHO's support to the health systems of developing countries.

Both leaders explored ways to encourage research, training and sharing of best practices in this area saying that the potential of traditional medicine had not been adequately appreciated until now. WHO DG agreed to initiate research in the area.

Dr Ghebreyesus appreciated India's domestic initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat scheme and India's campaign against Tuberculosis. He said that India had an important role to play in global health issues.
